Additional Learning Needs

For most children, high-quality teaching and learning are sufficient to meet their needs. At Ysgol Deganwy, we employ differentiated and/or targeted support strategies to facilitate pupil progress when necessary. However, a minority of children may have Additional Learning Needs (ALN) that require Additional Learning Provision (ALP). ALP is distinct from the educational provision typically available to all pupils. A child is considered to have ALN if they have a learning difficulty or disability, which may be due to a medical condition or other factors, necessitating additional learning support.

It’s essential to acknowledge that children and young people have diverse learning styles, and their needs can evolve over time. Through an ongoing process of identifying needs, sharing information, planning, taking action, and reviewing progress, the appropriate support can be determined and adjusted as needed. This approach allows for the modification of support—whether by increasing, reducing, or altering it—based on the child’s individual development. Such tailored support aims to facilitate their progress and enable them to achieve their goals and ambitions. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher or Mrs Parry who is our Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo).
